21A - Reading Reflection No. 2

I decided to read Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck.
1.     The general theme of the book is about different mindsets that lead to either success or failure. These mindsets are explained in terms of different roles in business, leadership, and relationships. It explains how one can change his or her mindset and aim for excellence.
2.     The book enhanced what I am learning in ENT3003 because it emphasizes the benefits of having a growth mindset when seeking accomplishment. A growth mindset allows one to be open to new challenges and to turn failure into motivation. Having a growth mindset is crucial to be a successful entrepreneur, for entrepreneurs take risks of failing. As a result, they learn from those failures and grow from them.
3.     If I were to design an exercise, based on this book, it would involve individuals identifying with having either a fixed or a growth mindset. In the exercise, the student would give examples of their personal experience (concerning leadership, business, and relationships) and how they have applied their type of mindset to each experience. Whether they have a fixed or a growth mindset, the individual would reflect and explain if and how they would want to change their mindset to one or the other.
4.     When reading the book, I reached a big realization when influence and role models were brought up. Carol Dweck stated that in order to become a leader, one must reconsider the beliefs that they were taught from his or her childhood. For example, teachers in the past mostly taught that all failure is a bad thing. However, according to Dweck, failure is essential.

  1. Nicollete,
Great work on this post. I didn't read the same book but I think you covered a lot of solid points from it and it seems like a worth while read. The last point about reconsidering the beliefs you grew up with is something that I don't think a lot of people really think about but is important for personal growth to be open to new ideas. Overall, good job.
