26A - Celebrating Failure

While failure can be extremely difficult to handle, it is a blessing in disguise. Everybody fails a few to many times in their life; however, all people should take them as learning experiences in order to grow from them and to improve for the future. I have “failed” this past semester by doing poorly on my first financial accounting exam. I psyched myself out by overworking and stressing myself out too much. Every time I would not be studying, I would feel guilty and study in the library until one in the morning and continue, even when I could not see straight. After doing poorly on this first exam, I realized that I needed to change my studying skills for the class. I approached the second exam in a new light by still studying very hard, while also getting the rest I needed. As a result, I got an A on the second exam. I believe that rest and not frying my brain was the main key to improving my study. Without rest, one’s brain cannot function efficiently. Handling failure is not easy and it is a setback. However, without it, there would be no learning experience on how to improve for the next time one is confronted with the same situation. I personally handle failure by finding some sort of silver lining in the situation because every failure is something to build on. Without these learning experiences, there would be no way to improve further. As we grow older as college students, learning from mistakes and improving is essential because we are laying down the foundation for our future.
This class has changed my perspective on failure through the napkin idea. Coming up with my own business idea and analyzing the steps I would have to take toward it has showed me that business comes with many risks and failures. Reaching out to people outside of my comfort zone has exposed me to more risk taking and opportunities. I am more likely to take risks now than before this course, for it has taught me how to think outside of the box.

  1. Nicolette,
I have encountered a similar situation when I'm taking my intro statistics course. I almost failed that class due to a lack of attention during lectures and did not put in enough effort before exams. However, I think we learned how important it is to take the classes seriously and avoid overload ourselves. I believe good time management skills can really help us a lot whenever we are taking hard courses.

  2. Nicolette,
I agree with your opinion that failure can be difficult to handle. Whether major or minor, failure means that you were not able to accomplish a plan or a feat that could have elevated your or your company's performance. However, how you deal with the failure would be more important than the fact that you've faced failure, and I am happy that this class helped you develop such skills.
